Paddling Cypress Springs: What to Know Before You Go

Paddling Cypress Springs: What to Know Before You Go
Just 45 minutes from Panama City, Cypress Springs offers one of Northwest Florida’s clearest and most refreshing kayak day trips. This local favorite features a short upstream paddle, crystal-clear water, and plenty of space to swim or snorkel. We break down where to launch, what to pack, and when to go—so you can make the most of your adventure.

Paddling Cypress Springs: What to Know Before You Go

Distance from Panama City: ~45 minutes | Paddle Time: 2–3 hours roundtrip

Cypress Springs is one of the clearest, coldest, and most convenient freshwater springs in Northwest Florida—and it’s just a short paddle upstream on Holmes Creek. This is the kind of quick adventure that reminds us why we live here.

If you’re planning your first trip (or your fiftieth), here’s what you need to know before you go.

Where to Launch

Your best access point is Cotton Landing, just off Highway 277 north of Vernon. It’s a short carry to Holmes Creek, and the paddle upstream to Cypress Springs is just over a mile. Expect an easy current, even for beginners.

If you’re hauling a heavier setup or want to avoid stairs at Cotton Landing, Culpepper Landing is a solid alternative. It’s slightly farther downstream, so you’ll paddle a bit longer.

What to Expect on the Water

This trip is beginner-friendly but packed with beauty. As you paddle through winding creek bends under the shade of cypress trees, the water becomes clearer the closer you get to the spring. The final approach is a narrow spring run, and then—just like that—you’re floating in crystal-clear water over limestone and sand.

  • Water clarity: Tannic along Holmes Creek, crystal clear at the spring

  • Paddle time: 30–45 minutes each way

  • Wildlife: Turtles, fish, birds, and occasionally alligators (harmless and shy)

There’s a rope swing at the spring and plenty of shallow spots to wade or swim. It’s a great place to snorkel, float, or cool down after your paddle.

What to Pack

For a successful Cypress Springs trip, pack light but smart. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Mask/snorkel or goggles for underwater views

  • Dry bag or waterproof box for valuables

  • Water shoes or Astral Loyaks for rocky footing

  • Hat, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses

  • Snacks and water (no glass bottles)

  • Small trash bag—pack it in, pack it out

  • Coast Guard–approved PFDs (required)

Need gear? Swing by Sunjammers before you go. We stock dry bags, PFDs, waterproof phone cases, and Astral footwear.

When to Go

Cypress Springs is no longer a hidden gem, especially in the summer. We recommend:

  • Early mornings (before 10 AM)

  • Weekdays if possible

  • Avoiding major holidays and holiday weekends

Weekends can bring a crowd, especially in warm months. If peace and quiet is your goal, stick to shoulder season paddling in spring or fall.

Can I Bring My Dog?

Yes, but plan ahead. Cypress Springs is a paddle-in spring and not all dogs enjoy the moving water. Bring fresh water, a bowl, and consider a dog life jacket. Leash up at the landing and be mindful of others around the spring basin.

Directions from Panama City

  • Take Hwy 231 North

  • Turn onto Hwy 277 North through Vernon

  • Follow signs to Cotton Landing

  • Use GPS for “Cotton Landing, Vernon FL” for easiest access

Parking is limited but free. There are basic restroom facilities at both Cotton and Culpepper landings.
