Lowrance

The next time you're around a group of anglers, ask them what their first fish finder was. If they've been in the game a while, chances are good that "Eagle Ultra" will be a popular response, possibly followed by the "System 2000" and other early flasher units made by Lowrance. These early sonar units were great performers for their time and truly revolutionized fishing, paving the way for new tactics and the advent of off-shore "structure" fishing. But much has changed since the introduction of these early units, and to say that sonar technology has improved is an understatement of grand proportion.

The X67C fishfinder from Lowrance embodies the most recent technological advancements made in the world of sport fishing electronics. The most notable and immediately apparent is the 256-color LCD display. If you've not used a color graph, it is truly a night-and-day difference from the gray screen models. Far from being a simple cosmetic difference, color displays make it much easier to distinguish fish and important structures on or near the bottom from the actual bottom -- something especially handy for anglers chasing those bottom-hugging species.

Lowrance considers the X67C a "Compact Fishfinder," which they use to designate all units having less than a 4" diagonal display. The X67C actually has a 3.5" diagonal display with a 320x240 pixel resolution. That's 320 vertical pixels, and as most experienced anglers will tell you, vertical pixels are the ones that really matter. Everything that's not coming out of the right side of your graph is history.

Another characteristic of Lowrance's compact series fishfinders, the X67C has a space-saving case design with adjustable tilt and quick-mount, quick-release convenience. The small case makes the X67C the perfect bow-mount unit. Also, for those anglers who require easy removal, the quick-mount/release Gimbal Bracket makes removal and reinstallation of this unit a snap, and vertical adjustment is as easy as squeezing the mount points together.

Finally, with all the technologies bundled into the X67C, this compact unit is easy to use, even for those of us who are not particularly technologically inclined. Less than 20 minutes after wiring the unit and mounting it to the bow of my boat, I had "tweaked" the automatic settings and entered the manual settings that I prefer. Trust me; this is much more a testament to the unit's intuitive navigation menu than to my technical proficiency.

Final verdict: the X67C is a fantastic secondary unit for anglers who wish to place a sonar unit at the bow of their boat. For those who don't require mapping or GPS and simply want to find fish and examine the bottom composition, the X67C will work just fine as a primary unit. If either of these descriptions fit you, give the X67C some consideration. It's a fantastic unit and well worth the price.
